Nothing spectacular here. I just wanted to confirm that my 40+ year old camera didn't have any light leaks or other major problems:

I have already satisfied my immediate camera plan from My New Year's Resolutions. Let's hope the rest of the years goes as well.

“The cameras of the 1960s and 1970s have a better chance of working in 2050 than those made in the 1980s……”

I begin with this quote from Karen Nakamura’s Photoethnography, entry for the Minolta SRT-101. The SRT-101 was introduced in 1966, as one of the earliest cameras with through the lens metering. The SRT-201 added a true flash synched hot shoe, and that was the only difference.

To synch this Hot Shoe you need a cable that plugs into the side. I never use flash, so who cares!

I’ll also share with you a friend’s story of his experience with the SRT-Series in general. Jamie was in a small plane crash or more like a very hard landing in a farm field (no serious injuries). He had been doing some aerial photography and on impact his SRT flew out of his hands. He later found it imbedded in the wing of the plane, and the camera still worked!

And that’s why I love my clunky, old, fully manual, all metal body SRT cameras. here's another view of my latest family member……..

Most of my recent 35mm B&W images were made with my SRT-202 (also used for these photos), which was a 1970’s update (1975-1978). A fully manual camera is s great place to start if you are experimenting with film. And even if the battery dies you can still shoot as long as you are able to “guestimate” the proper exposure. With constant use, that “guestimation” is usually workable, especially with B&W film.

The Canonet Rangefinder is next on deck for repairs, after I priced the replacements. In excellent condition a replacement would cost more than $200, so certainly worth fixing. I looked back to find an earlier posting from 2009, where I pondered whether or not to repair this camera. So it has been offline for a while.

The Canonet Series were 1970’s Leica M-Series knock-offs. This was the final high end version of the Canonet Series. It offered Aperture Priority, Auto Exposure and Manual Exposure modes. It is also just a fun little camera. For some Canonet photo examples I can recommend “I Love Old Cameras”.

Oddly, flowers do work in B&W. Just look at any of Maplethorpe's less controversial Flower images.....No claims to that level of greatness here, but i came across some photos I took just about a year ago.

My friend and owner of the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate had sent some beautiful orchids while I was recuperating from surgery. And they really did last a month as she said they would.......

The Minolta XD-11: The BEST Camera That Nobody Wanted

I came across an article on-line regarding “High Water Marks” for various camera brands. It seems to support my statement that the XD-11 was the BEST camera that nobody wanted. Making its appearance in 1977, the XD-11 was part of the late 70’s technology boom in lens development and film quality.

Winning Features:

· Auto Exposure with both Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority options

· Programmable override for Shutter Speed Priority

· Excellent viewing screen (very bright)

· Great ergonomics

· Leaf Shutter

The quality of Minolta MD Rokker lenses is also vastly under-rated. This may have been due to mass marketing to amateurs with little attention to attracting the professional photographer. In turn, lack of professional exposure discouraged amateurs, etc, eventually killing the Brand, although their recent digital technology was purchased by Sony. I experienced this ‘disdain’ when I returned to college after my Christmas break freshman year with a Minolta SRT-SCII, marked down to discount prices because of the new XD-11 model. One of my wealthier friends returned with a Canon AE-1, but since my photos were often much better than hers I didn’t let it phase me.

Dig into my slides from Spain, Norway, and Africa........and Post them for you!

For years I had a Cereus that never bloomed. I recently had the opportunity to buy one with blossoms ready to go. This is a true night blooming variety; the flowers start to open at about 9:00 in the evening only last 24 hours.

We'll watch the progress of the flower for the rest of this week. Next week, End of Year Wrap up. In case you wondered where I've been, had some ups and downs finishing my course work. But more importantly we've been working on the darkroom. It will make its debut in early January 2012.

Sorry for the inconsistent posing lately. My new job has completely absorbed me, and since it involves an extreme form of imaging you can't blame me.

We've also spent a good part of last weekend (and will go out tomorrow) off road for the end of the season. We've had our first snow, and the closing of some of our high mountain passes. So soon that world will be inaccessible.

We've had our first major snow in the high country. Buffalo Pass is inevitably closed now with a foot or so of snow. So this is a goodbye to Summer & Fall!

We spent our late summer vacation in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The name given to the area by French Trappers who heard a sound like a steamboat engine, and found that it was coming from one of the hot springs.

Actually more warm springs, at least at the main park location..........

The White Sulfur Springs is one of more than a dozen that occur around the Steamboat Springs Area.

I've been on an unplanned hiatus. I've started a new job, which for a while was all consuming. Then an unexpected bout of a resistant bacterial infection put me in the hospital overnight.......now recovered.

I took a drive in the mountains Friday, but because I work in film you'll have to wait for those images.....So we'll start with a glimpse of my end of summer vacation. It's already getting dark early, the geese are overhead. Summer is gone.

In case you wee wondering: Virga is rain that evaporates before reaching the ground. Very common in the western U.S.

Taken earlier this spring, it is a panorama composite of two Mamiya 6X6 images, taken with E100VS film. And showing some of that 200% snow pack that kept people skiing through July 4th at Arapahoe Basin (right of center, far horizon around the bend).

The Worst Day of My Life, One Year Later............

The worst day of my life, one year later..........on 7/22/2010 I was diagnosed with stage 3b breast cancer. I remember the oncologist asking me how far I was willing to go; how much I could endure? I told him that I would do anything to survive! 8 months of chemotherapy; bilateral mastectomy with 8 weeks surgical recovery; 12 weeks of intensive physical therapy; 33 daily radiation treatments; soon finishing 1 year of imunotherapy on September 8th.

One year later, I only now realize everything that I've been through; but I also rejoice in the heroic efforts to give me my life back! And whether or not you knew, blogging gave me a much needed distraction; something to do that didn't have anything to do with being ill; a reason to go out and photograph on the weekends that I did feel better.

Me, Andy and my new hair (that came back curly for some reason).

Now I feel such an urgency to live; tremendous forward momentum; promises of a new beginning. I can still hug my little dog and smile ;=)

Film Test Part II: Add some Fuji?

I know, not fair double teaming........But I happened to have some Fuji Superia 200 (their cheap film) in the Kodak Pocket Camera and decided why not shoot the same scene. So here we go, results not a cut and dry as the first, but the Ektar green is still not the actual green of my lawn and foliage; neither is the Fuji. So you know who wins by a hair.....E100VS.

First the Fuji Superia 200:

And the winner by a hair, E100VS:

Ektar and the Fuji film are more similar. Both are colder films (e.g. notice the color of the pavement in the background). Now the pavement isn't pinkish either, but the over all color balance of the E100VS is still truer to life.

Film Test Results........Part I: Not my shade of Pink!

For the rest of this week let's look at the color film test results for Kodak E100VS (transparency) vs. Kodak Ektar 100 (print).

Remeber that we've looked at Ektar before and I have to say the results have not surprised me:

First E100VS for a salmon colored Poppy in my yard:

And although you may prefer the Pinker poppy, salmon pink is actually the color of the E100VS Poppy. The Ektar color is off.

Why does it matter if I use Photoshop? That's fine for digital, but the whole idea of film is that it is designed to have the correct color balance. One should not have to spend time correcting colors when using film. It defeats the purpose of film.........

If you've been following for a while you know that I lamented the loss of my favorite color film Kodak E100GX. A 'cousin' of this film still exists E100VS (vivid saturation). I've used it before but had preferred the former.

Anyway, I've also recently tried Kodak's new print film Ektar 100, with mixed results. But to be fair I decided to have a head to head test of Ektar 100 vs E100VS, using identical camera models and settings. The in camera meters were within 1/2 stop or less. About 10 years difference in age.

That film is now at the shop being developed. But Note to Self, don't use 36 exp for a film test, it will take forever! I started this in February after all!

(And Yes I do know that everyone raves about Fuji Velvia 50, but that's too slow for my 35 mm work, and Velvia 100 has real color balance problems. If I wanted to spend all of my time in Photoshop making these corrections I wouldn't use film.)
